Dental Emergencies 101

What to Do When You Need Urgent Care

Toothache: Rinse with warm water and gently floss to remove any debris that may be causing the pain. If the pain persists, do not apply aspirin or any other medication directly to the tooth, as it may damage the gum tissue. Instead, contact your dentist immediately.

Knocked-Out Tooth: Handle the tooth by the crown (top) and rinse it gently with water. Try to reposition it in the socket if possible. If that's not feasible, place it in a container of milk or a tooth preservation product and contact your dentist immediately. Time is crucial for successful reattachment.

Cracked or Broken Tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water, and to reduce swelling, use a cold compress. Contact your dentist as soon as possible.

Lost Filling or Crown: If a filling or crown falls out, keep it in a safe place and contact your dentist. You can temporarily reattach it using over-the-counter dental cement available at most pharmacies.

Abscess or Swelling: Dental abscesses can be serious and even life-threatening if left untreated. Rinsing your mouth with warm saltwater and contacting your dentist is essential if you notice swelling, pus, or a fever.

Why Professional Help Matters
