Steps for Post Tooth Extraction Care

  1. Bite down on gauze: After the tooth extraction, the dentist will place a piece of gauze over the extraction site. Bite down on it firmly for at least 30 minutes to help control bleeding. If bleeding persists, replace the gauze with a new piece and bite down again for another 30 minutes.
  2. Apply an ice pack: Swelling is a common side effect after a tooth extraction. Apply an ice pack to reduce swelling - to your cheek for 10-20 minutes at a time, with 20-minute intervals in between. You can repeat this process for the first 24-48 hours.
  3. Take pain medication: If you experience pain after the extraction, take over-the-counter pain medication such as paracetamol or Nurofen as directed by your dentist.
  4. Avoid solid foods: Stick to soft foods such as yogurt, soup, and applesauce for the first few days after the extraction. Avoid hot or spicy foods, which can irritate the extraction site.
  5. Don't smoke or use straws: Smoking and using straws can cause suction in the mouth, which can dislodge the blood clot that forms over the extraction site. This can delay healing and cause a painful condition called dry socket.
  6. Brush and floss gently:  You should continue to brush and floss your teeth, but be gentle around the extraction site. Avoid brushing directly on the site for the first 24 hours.
  7. Follow Dr Feng's instructions: Your dentist will give you specific instructions on how to care for your mouth after the extraction. Follow these instructions carefully to promote healing and prevent complications.

If you experience severe pain, bleeding, or other complications after the extraction, contact Brite Family Dental right away.
