In essence, a dental crown is a manufactured tooth used to repair several different dental problems. Crowns are an excellent option when a tooth has become weakened, commonly through a fracture, damage, decay or misshapen.
There are different possibilities when it comes to designing a crown. Some crowns are designed to match the colour and texture of your teeth with porcelain or ceramic materials, whereas others can be made from different metals such as gold alloy, as they are used to strengthen the existing tooth. In some cases, we opt for a porcelain crown over the top of the gold alloy to provide strength and a natural smile.
Dental Crowns - The Procedure
Prior to your crown procedure, a mould of the existing tooth made by your dentist. From here, your dentist will discuss the best solutions for your teeth.
When coming in for a dental crown procedure, your friendly dentist will prepare your tooth, usually by removing the outer layer of your tooth to the crown have a base to grab onto and appear the same as your existing teeth.
To make the crown, another mould is made. This mould will be sent to a dental technician who will prepare the crown in matching it to both your natural teeth in size and colour. While you await your new crown, a temporary crown might be inserted while you await your permanent crown. After your new permanent crown is ready, you will have to revisit us and have your crown fitted to the reshaped original tooth. The crown is secured to you based on a dental adhesive or cement.
Aftercare for Dental Crowns
Like after any procedure, aftercare is essential. To take care of your new crown, follow these instructions to prolong the procedure's lifespan. Maintaining a regular oral hygiene routine is how to do this with brushing two times a day and flossing every day. Having a routine that will avoid decay is what you need to keep in mind. Avoiding foods and behaviours that will impact this is also advised to prevent complications.
